Do you like courtroom drama? Anime sensibilities? All combined into something dramatic and silly? Then look no further than The Ace Attorney. But if you’re a new player, it can be tough to know where to start. You have the original trilogy, spinoffs, and more recent titles. The solution is here.
Capcom set to launch the prequel called The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles. If you don’t know, Capcom is the Japanese video game developer responsible for titles like Resident Evil and Street Fighter. They provide such a wide range of entertainment that they are even a slot game manufacturer (you check some of those games at this link – slots Canada). They constantly create fun and exciting experiences, whether killing zombies or high-kicking your opponent; they are a synonym for a good time.
Get your suit on
Chronicles is a compilation of two games initially launched in Japan a few years back but have now received a proper English translation. Most of your time is spent in a courtroom, as you would expect from a game that has the word “attorney” in the title. Your goal? Find contradictions in the evidence material you look through. You will spend the majority of the game reading with crime scene investigations thrown here and there.
Chronicles take place at the dawn of the Meiji period when Japan first began opening itself up to Western influence (including law). Because of this, many characters involved will be in awe of things like judges, juries, or photographs. What is essential for newcomers to the franchise is that you don’t need to know anything from previous installments.
The very first scene introduces a new protagonist, a law student named Ryunosuke Naruhodo. He got accused of killing a visiting professor from Great Britain and is forced to defend himself. The trial is simultaneously intense and ridiculous. A key piece of evidence involves how a steak got into the wrong hands, the same ones that ate it, and one of the key witnesses is a soldier who appears to be controlled by a baby.
The feel of the game
What’s remains the same about the game is that it retains the same feel as previous installments. It has humour; it has drama and over-the-top characters. And, of course, it is on you to figure out the case save the day.
The setting and majority of the characters have received some changes. It’s a welcomed step forward and refreshment. But the reasons why many people fell in love with the game in the first place are still there. And with no previous knowledge needed, it is the perfect place for newcomers to join.
The bad part
The game though loveable, could be exhausting at points. Sometimes the cases can drag on for too long, stuffed with unnecessarily tangled leaps in logic that are not very believable and require a significant amount of time to set straight before proceeding. There’s also too much dialogue before the crucial bits of information coming.
Luckily you can hit autoplay, a feature that scrolls through game text automatically but stops whenever the player needs to make a choice. In short, even with its little quirks, the game will be loved by longtime fans. And for newcomers its is an excellent place to start. Who knows, maybe they too will fall for the subtle charm of the Ace Attorney series.
